The Institute for Performance Management is a cross-industry initiative with one purpose: to raise the standard of performance management training and evaluation worldwide. We certify business managers against a published syllabus, assessed by examination.
The problem we exist to address
Most managers are never taught performance management. They inherit a form, an annual deadline and a set of habits from whoever managed them, and they work it out as they go. The result is a discipline practised everywhere and understood unevenly, where the same words mean different things in neighbouring departments and appraisals are endured rather than used.
Training exists, but it is hard to judge from outside. Course descriptions read alike, few courses assess anything, and fewer still can say who checked the content against real practice.
What we do differently
The syllabus is published, so you can read all eight modules before paying. The course is assessed by an exam with a 70% pass mark rather than a certificate of attendance, so passing it means something. And the content was reviewed and approved by an Industry Advisory Council of nine senior business leaders at organisations including IBM, BP, Dell, HP and Fujitsu, who checked it against how performance is managed in their own companies.
Passing carries the designation Certified Performance Management Professional (CPMP) from the Institute for Performance Management.
Who we teach
Business managers and supervisors, across industries and countries. The material is written for commercial organisations rather than government or the charity sector, and it gives particular attention to fast growing companies, where performance systems tend to be improvised early and painful later.
